Illinois is one of a handful of states that gives its residents access to Obamacare coverage through its own full-service website for insurance coverage, Get Covered Illinois. As a state marketplace, it provides you with the same coverage and options as the federal program does. The only significant difference is in the price of the available policies and the insurers offering them. To get your free Illinois health insurance quote, click here.
How to Apply
If you are interested in applying, go to the website and be prepared to provide the following information:
- Your zip code
- Your age
- Your monthly household income
- The number of people in your household
- If anyone in your household is enrolled in Medicaid or other public aid programs
Depending on your answers, Get Covered Illinois will determine if you are eligible to apply through the Health Insurance marketplace and then connect you with several coverage options.
Types of Coverage
Illinois offers a four-tier system of healthcare: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. This has replaced the standard vs. premium plan level system.
- Bronze – Has the lowest deductible, but you pay 40 percent of care expenses
- Silver – Has a low deductible, but you pay 30 percent of care expenses
- Gold – Has a high deductible, but you pay 20 percent of care expenses
- Platinum – Has the highest deductible, but you pay 10 percent of care expenses
All plans offer the same essential benefits, including preventative care, pregnancy care, and pediatric vision and dental coverage, but adult vision and dental care are only included in certain plans.
Coverage for Small Businesses
Small business owners can purchase employee healthcare coverage through the SHOP program, but only through the Healthcare.gov website. Under Get Covered Illinois, employers with 25 or fewer full time employees may qualify for a federal tax credit if they provide insurance through the SHOP program.
